Durham University
Durham Business School is an integral part of Durham University, one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the UK. Durham was placed 5th in the Complete University Guide 2009. Established in 1832, Durham University is the third oldest in England after Oxford and Cambridge, and currently has more than 15,000 students from over 120 countries.
Your qualification will have a hallmark of quality not only from Durham Business School, but also from a university with an impressive history and track record.
The collegiate system is a major part of the Durham experience and full-time students become a member of both the University and a college or society of their choice. In addition to providing accommodation, colleges offer social and sports facilities and the opportunity to mix with postgraduate students from other departments across the University.
The Durham colleges and societies are not teaching bodies, but neither are they purely residential.
They contribute to the research work of the University through Fellowships; foster interdisciplinary contact among staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students; and provide a social network for every section of student society.
Durham City and Beyond
Durham is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and offers a quality of life unrivalled by its peers. Over a thousand years old, few places can match its beautiful, dramatic setting on a rocky horseshoe bend in the River Wear. The great Norman Cathedral and Castle (which is part of the University) form a World Heritage site, recognised by UNESCO as one of the most exceptional historic and architectural features on the planet.
In 2008 Durham was voted the Number 1 UK city in the annual Condé Nast Traveller Readers´ Travel Awards. Voters praised Durham for its user-friendly size, its value for money and its cleanliness. They also felt that overall Durham is ´an extremely pretty university city´ and that the people make it an ´amazingly nice place´ to visit.
Durham City is a wonderful place to study and enjoy life - large enough to house the full range of cultural, retail and entertainment outlets expected in a city, but small enough to be charming, friendly, safe and welcoming to visitors. And you don´t need a car to get around.
If sport is your thing, you´ll love Durham University. We have a huge range of university- and college-run sports clubs for you to join, many with impressive records in competitions: whatever your sport, whatever the level at which you play, you will find opportunities to take part.
The North-East region boasts some of the most breathtaking countryside in Britain: within 30 miles of Durham you can enjoy the beautiful Northumberland coastline, Hadrian´s Wall World Heritage Site, and the rolling hillsides of the Cheviots and the North Pennines - starting point of the north-east´s three beautiful rivers (Tyne, Wear and Tees). With excellent bus and train links, there´s no excuse not to explore.
The region is fast becoming a centre for arts and culture with innovative projects such as the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, the biggest gallery of its kind in the world; the Sage Gateshead, a stunning £70m home for music and music discovery, offering both performance and participation projects; and the Metro Radio Arena, which attracts big name acts and is also home to the Newcastle Eagles Basketball Team.
